LGBTQ+ Terminology for Interpreters and Translators

When: Saturday, October 9 from 1:00-4:00pm (California time)

Where: Zoom

CE approved: ATA (3 points), CIMCE: 3 hrs.; CCHI: 2.75 CE hrs.; 0.275 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs

The rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, pansexual, non-binary and intersex (LGBTQ+) people are being discussed ever more frequently in the media and are being handled in greater numbers in both the medical and legal arenas. It’s important for us to be familiar with the correct terminology and pertinent law. However you may personally feel about LGBTQ+ issues, as interpreters and translators we need to know the correct terminology in medical and legal settings to act as the professionals that we are and also to avoid the use of incorrect, outdated, or offensive terminology.

This session will provide a brief history of the LGBTQ+ movement and current issues as well as terminology that goes well beyond the basics. It will also list numerous resources, including books, articles, websites, podcasts, shows and movies which will increase attendees knowledge of this important subject matter.

Finally, time permitting, attendees will be able to participate in exercises that address real situations they may face and the best way to handle them.
