Webinar:

Join NCTA on Saturday, August 21 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm (PDT) for a new webinar on interpreting in mental health settings. The webinar will be presented by Dr. Mishkin, a psychiatrist, and Maria Carla Faccini, a staff interpreter at Sanford Healthcare.

Participants will become familiar with the 7 elements of a mental status exam and will be able to name and define the sections. In addition, the webinar will explore the key differences between interpreting in a psychiatric setting versus other medical settings. Participants will also learn about the unique challenges of interpretation in each of the areas of the mental status exam and will acquire the tools necessary to meet the challenges of interpreting in mental health settings.

About the Presenters:

Dr. Mishkin is a consultation-liaison psychiatrist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. She completed Medical School and a Public Health Master’s degree in New Orleans at Tulane University, recently completed her Master’s in bioethics at the Albert Einstein Center for Bioethics in New York, previously completed psychiatry residency in New York at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hosital Center, and fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Montefiore hospital in the Bronx. She is the psychiatric liaison to the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Her clinical and research interests include access to care and equity across populations, and adherence and behavioral aspects of medical care.

Maria Carla Faccini is a staff interpreter at Stanford Healthcare in Palo Alto, CA. She is also a freelance conference interpreter. She holds an M.A. in Conference Interpretation from the Middleburry Institute of International Studies at Monterey (Spanish, English and French) She also teaches continuing education workshops for medical interpreters.
