Spanish-English Bilingual Book Club | June meeting | Berkeley

June 25, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

After a long hiatus, the Spanish-English Book Club is back!

This will be our third meeting!
We will read Umami by Mexican author Laia Jufresa (review in Spanish here, review in English here). We will meet in at the café One Plus Berkeley, on Saturday, June 25th from 10 am to 12 pm. Please RSVP to secure your spot and make sure the meeting takes place. If there are not enough registered people, the meeting will get cancelled or postponed.

This is a bilingual, Spanish / English book club. How does it work?

We pick a book that has been originally written in Spanish during the last 10 or 15 years and that has been translated into English. We want to read the new Latin American and Iberian literature!

We’ll have 5 or 6 weeks to read the selected book either in its original Spanish version, in its English translation or both. That’s the fun thing here—it’s totally up to you! You can choose to read the book either in Spanish, in English or both!

When it’s time for our book discussion, we’ll meet at the café One Plus Berkeley, a 2 minute-walk from Downtown Berkeley BART station.

During the meeting, we can have bilingual discussions on different aspects of the book, including topics that might be interesting to translators, such as linguistic, stylistic and cultural choices made in translation or choices you would make in tricky passages if you had been the translator.

Happy bilingual reading and we hope to see you soon!
