This workshop is for both translators and interpreters who wish to learn important terminology relating to wildland and structural fires. Here in California and throughout the western United States, we see increased communication about fire prevention and best practices for managing our wildlands. Translators and interpreters are often asked to help with public announcements and education before, during and after wildfire season. Interpreters may be needed during on-scene emergencies during a wildfire. In addition, court interpreters work on cases with expert testimony by firefighters, law enforcement, medical personnel and forestry and land management professionals.
This workshop will cover arson laws, crime scene preservation, evidence collection, and burn patterns. It will describe wildland fire behavior based on factors such as vegetation, topography, etc. The speaker will also describe structure fires and how they behave.
This workshop will be taught in English and is appropriate for translators and interpreters working in any language combination.
