The Northern California Translators Association (NCTA) was founded in 1978 to assist translators and interpreters with the challenges they meet in their profession. NCTA has been serving the T&I community since then through the active participation of its members.

NCTA addresses the needs and concerns of professional translators and interpreters, provides guidance to those entering the field, and furthers the profession in terms of standards and public recognition. A professional association of translators and interpreters, NCTA has become a pillar of the foreign language industry in California.

With a membership of over 550 individuals, businesses and institutions, NCTA not only serves the Northern California area but has members throughout North America and as far away as Germany, Brazil and Japan.

Benefits of membership

  • Our online member database of translators and interpreters is searched more than 100 times per day on average.
  • There are four annual general meetings, several workshops, local ATA certification exam sittings, and many networking events throughout the Bay Area.
  • Members receive our quarterly journal Translorial with articles and information about upcoming events.
  • The NCTA ethics committee can help mediate between translators and clients in the case of disputes.
  • Members are listed in the NCTA Directory of Translators and Interpreters, and each member receives an updated copy once per year.
  • Corporate members are listed on the corporate and institutional members page in addition to receiving all the same benefits as the individual members.

Types of membership

Individual or corporate/institutional members of NCTA enjoy all the advantages mentioned above. They are added to our database and receive the quarterly Translorial and other member notices. They receive the NCTA Directory of Translators and Interpreters and A Practical Guide for Translators, and can participate in mailing lists. Corporate members are also listed, with their own company profile, in the membership directory and on the NCTA website.

In addition to these benefits, members can also apply for inclusion in the Professional section of NCTA's current Directory of Translators and Interpreters. It is designed to promote the services of our professionally qualified members, and serves as the basis for our telephone referral service. The directory also includes a listing of all our individual and corporate/institutional members. The Professional section of the directory lists the languages, specialties, experience, credentials and profile of professional translators and interpreters belonging to NCTA.

Membership application and renewal forms can be downloaded directly from our site. If you would like more information, please see our contact page for information on how to contact our administrator or one of the board members.
